My Home Office [Update]

Posted on 20. Aug, 2010 by in Personal Stuff

Two years ago, I posted a picture of my home office set up. You can see the previous post here. I have since upgraded to my new apartment in the city and I felt it was time to update you on what has changed and what’s still the same with my home office set up.

So here’s the new home office:

The Home Office Set Up:

  1. 27 inch iMac Desktop. This is new since the last update. This unit is where I do most of my core work, writing, planning, media recording and editing and so forth.
  2. 17″ Macbook Pro. My trusty old notebook is still used for work that I do on the road. Admittedly, I rarely use this now since most of my work is on my desktop which bigger and faster. But useful when I decide to go mobile. I am thinking about replacing this with a 13″ MacBook Pro for traveling. We’ll see.
  3. Apple iPad. Its the quickest way to surf the web. I use it mostly for social networking and for checking my web and commission stats. I use it daily but its more for entertainment, and for very general planning or drafting work. It can’t replace a computer and I guess its not meant to anyway.
  4. 1 Terabyte Apple Time Capsule. After experiencing HD crashes, I never neglect the need to backup, backup, backup!
  5. 1 Terabyte external HD. This is where I keep all my digital media. Most of it is filled with personal development and Internet marketing related products that I have purchased over the last few years.
  6. The fuel of champions…my 3 liters of distilled water a day. The bottle in blue is my HydraCoach which tracks how much water I consume daily and at what rates. (Yes, I am anal retentive)
  7. My “brain wall” has expanded to a floor to ceiling magnetic whiteboard where all my ideas go to wait to be executed.
  8. The guitar is great for a quick break. Playing a tune is a great way to change your state and relax the mind.
  9. The view has been expanded. I know get to look out of the 45th floor to see the KLCC park and the Twin Towers. Also looking at people working in the office next door reminds me that I never want to go back to an office job! Ugh!
  10. Comfy chair. To plant my butt.
  11. Samson C01U USB condenser microphone for video tutorials and other audio recording needs.

  12. Health related books and programs. Because being healthy is important to me.
  13. Baby related books and programs. Because raising great and healthy kids is important to me.
  14. Personal development books. Because constant and never ending personal improvement is important to me.
  15. Wealth related books. Because learning to manage wealth is important to me.
  16. Internet marketing programs. Because making money online is fun.
  17. Internet marketing books. See above.
  18. Used journals. One of my biggest habits is to write down ideas, goals and just about anything that is important to me. I keep all my scribbles because I think they are a valuable part in the creation process.
  19. Geek Stuff! Can’t call myself a geek without some geeky stuff. I have the Darth Vader and Optimus Prime voice changer/mask and of course…a light saber too.

So that’s my updated setup.

What’s your home office like? Please share, I would love to get ideas on ways to work more efficiently! :)

Thank you for sharing pictures of your home office. I am VERY jealous of your view and set up :) I have recently decided to take on a new position which will require leaving a nice office space at the community college I work for to maintain a new home office in my basement.

Do you have any suggestions about how I can make my home office as functional and organized as possible?

You can email me at timelord20@me.com.

Thanks,

Kelvin

I’m not sure what kind of work you do but for me the best thing is the “brain wall” which is very useful for me. Floor to ceiling magnetic whiteboard for me to write ideas, post printouts..etc. This helps me to stay organized. I also value the open shelf space that surrounds my desk. I had this custom built to maximize the possible storage space. This works out well because I have a lot of choice as to how I want to organize all my books and programs that I often used for reference. The one thing I wish I had more of is desk space. I thought I had a lot but when I put in the computers, the space available for writing is not as much as I would like. So I had to get an extra side table from Ikea. Oh the other thing that’s useful is to have lots of power points. I installed a rail system that allows me to add up to 8 points anywhere along the left side of my desk. There’s another 6 more power outlets on the lower shelf for modem, router, chargers…etc. this helps me organize the placement of the electronic items as well as the wires.

I do a lot of programming so my set up is a lot simpler. I used a long dark wooden table with no drawers, a director’s chair which feels more comfortable. I had my curtains drawn most of the time.

Hi Brian,
nice office, congratulations!
I’m the father of a 5 month old baby boy and I´m interested in recommendations you might have about baby related books and programs.
Best,
Marco

The best book is Contented Baby by Gina Ford. We follow her recommended schedules and our children sleep very well through the night. I have some friends who love and some who just can’t follow the schedules for some reason or another. For us, its a very good system and we stick to it quite seriously.

Great office, Brian. I own a website development company in downtown and commute min 2 and half hour everyday by driving. The reason that I leave that far is due tot the face that my hometown has a great british educational institute for my son, 9 years old. recently I decided to share my den with my son. so he can learn from what he sees from me but not sure if that is better idea than having his own room.

Been looking at doing SEO and bettering the design on my site for a while, so this website has been really helpful. Clear read as well, so thank you!

I’m always looking for other home office setups. I too work a large amount of the business day there and want it to be a very relaxing yet very productive space.
Thanks for sharing your setup…
