Rethinking How I Think About Wallets

The Back Story
In my house, there’s a basket where I keep my socks. And I used to have a cat called “Misty” who loved to take naps in that basket. Over time, her white fur will get on my black socks and that was not cool. So I had a cover over the sock basket so that Misty could have a naps and my socks would be free of cat fur.
Well, its been more than 10 years since Misty went to cat heaven and guess what? The sock basket still has the cover on it. The reason for the inconvenient cover was no longer there and yet I still had that cover on the basket.
So I started wondering, what other redundant activities do I have in my life that started with good reason but now is totally irrelevant.
Answer: The Butt Brick Wallet
I’ve been keeping my wallet in my back pocket for as long as I can remember. I guess I grew up thinking that was what the back pocket is designed for.
Today, I have discovered that I have more than 10 pairs of pants that have developed a hole in the back pocket because obviously when you sit down, the wallet places stress on the same point and over time a hole will develop!
Also, as more “stuff” collects in the wallet, it gets really uncomfortable to sit on and my credit cards end up breaking into two over time.
Enter the Koyono Wallet
So I started a search for thin wallets that can fit in the front pocket of my pants or jeans and happily discovered the Koyono Slimmy Wallet. A few clicks and 5 days later, I have a new wallet!
Here’s what I think of it….
Its Not Magic
First thing I realized is that the Koyono Slimmy Wallet is not magic. Its not suppose to hold more stuff in a thinner form. Instead, it forces you to change your mindset and only carry the stuff that you actually need.
Instead of giving you loads of slots and compartments for stuff you will never need, you only get a choice of 3 compartments.

At first, I found it EXTREMELY uncomfortable to remove 50% of the “stuff” that i had in my original wallet. I kept thinking “what if I really needed it?”. But I decided to force myself to change my mindset.
2 Weeks Later
After 2 weeks of using my new wallet, I am sold. Yes, we probably do not need half the stuff in our wallets and we only carry them around because our wallet has the capacity for it.

I think there’s some kind of law (I forget the name) that states work fills up the time we allocate for it. Meaning if we allow a project to have a 1 week deadline, we will create enough work for it to finish in a week whether it takes more or less time for its effective completion.
This principle also applies to our wallets! We’ll put as much “stuff” as there are slots and space in our wallets.
With my new Koyono Slimmy Wallet, I am now effectively carrying only what I need and I have not missed any of the other “stuff” removed so far.
And furthermore, I am saving my jeans and pants from the dreaded “back pocket hole” effect. I wish I had done this sooner.

Hahaha Butt Brick! So true. I think men could develop a scoliosis from sitting on a one sided butt brick.
My alternative is to wear cargos and keep it in the side knee pockets. Save myself a sore ass.
The law is parkinson’s law.

Ha ha, good for you for getting rid of your ‘butt brick’ Brian.
I too like to keep the clutter out of my wallet but I do need to do a clean out every week or so.
Sounds like a good investment you made, not only do you sit more comfortably, you are saving money on pants.

@ David: Actually you made a great point. I don’t think that you can ever get scoliosis from having a Butt Brick although it will cause lower back and hip problems. I have a good friend that is a chiropractor and he has made the point to me how bad it is to keep your overstuffed wallet in your back pocket. It shifts your hips especially when you sit down, causing you to develop problems in your lower spine and surrounding area.
@ Brian: Great information here. I have to totally agree with you here and have been using a “slim” wallet for quite some time now. It fits perfectly in my front pocket and holds only what I absolutely need. I am a big believer in eliminating clutter and the wallet is no exception.
