Google Chrome OS Vs Mac OSX and Windows?
Posted on 24. Nov, 2009 by Brian Wong in Technology
Everybody is dying to get a glimpse of Google’s upcoming Chrome OS – that is the name of Google’s new operating system. And here it is. They had a demo at earlier this month at the company HQ.
Here are the highlights:
Speed & Simplicity
Speed and Simplicity is the focus. Sound familiar? They are copying the successful model of the speed and simplicity of the Google search.
How fast?
They say 7 seconds to boot up and 3 seconds to launch an app. Yep. 10 seconds flat. That’s pretty fast.
Going After the Netbook
However, don’t expect this baby to cut into Mac and Windows slug fest. This OS is specifically targeted at netbooks.
The apps are all web apps and they have opened up the code for Chrome OS so that developers can start creating apps for it.
The Coming OS War?
Well, I like the idea of speed and simplicity but I’m very entrenched with the Mac OSX. It would take a LOT for Google to make me switch over completely.
What I do see in the future is that we would carry lightweight netbooks for traveling and mobile computing. So I can imagine the mild possibility of me using it. But I gotta say, I’m also dying to get a glimpse of the rumored Apple Netbook.
Conclusion
I think its going to be a hard sell to get people to switch over. Well, for me anyway.
But then again, we’re talking about Google. They already have Google Search, Google Mail, Google Docs and tons of other Google Apps that we use everyday.
While that is a valid point, I can still access these services from other computers at the moment. They might be able to pull it off if they get us all used to having our data on Google and then suddenly making it only available on Google OS! But their motto is “Don’t Be Evil” right?
Anyway, time will tell.
