Google Chrome – A Firefox Killer?

Google just launched Google Chrome for Windows which is Google’s very own Internet browser. The jury is still out on whether it will be a serious contender against the dominant Mozilla’s Firefox. Since more and more applications are hosted online, the browser wars are now more important than ever. In the future, the browser will essentially be the doorway to all your applications both free and paid.

What Internet browser do you use? Definitely forget about Internet Explorer. It’s a dinosaur on its way out. I’ve tried Safari, Flock and Firefox. Here’s my 2 cents.

I gave Safari a serious try when I first got my Mac Powerbook. It’s definitely the fastest browser with the least problems (e.g. no hanging or crashing) but its has one major flaw. Not enough third-party addons and plugins that I find critical for my browsing experience.

As mentioned in previous posts, I really need the Search Status and Global Search plugins to complement my PPC research. This is where corporate owned browsers will lost to open source browsers like Mozilla’s Firefox.

After Safari, I used Flock diligently for a year. Flock is touted as the “social browser” as it has integrated support for most social network sites, YouTube, blogging platforms ..etc. I also used it because it runs on the Mozilla Firefox platform. Alas, although I really like Flock, its very “buggy”. Hangs a lot and not all Firefox Addons and Plugins runs on Flock.

So in the end, I switched back to Firefox after version 3 came out. I’m especially in love with Firefox 3′s new features. Its very stable, most compatible with websites and I find that I can use all the addons I really need. My browsing experience in Firefox 3 is far more efficient than before.

But now Google announces Chrome which puts me in a dilemma. At the moment, I’m not switching because its such a pain to reorganize established browsing habits and to start forming new ones with a new browser. But I can’t help to think that I’m just delaying the inevitable.

I use so many Google services including Gmail, Calender, Adwords, Adsense, Google Video, Google Docs and obviously Google Search… that I’m thinking that its a matter of time before I succumb to using their browser as well. But not just yet.

Prime reason is that it currently does not support Macs. But I think its a matter of time as better and better versions come out. Check out the main features of Google Chrome here:

What are your thoughts? Will you be switching?
